It was a beautiful day today, marred only by the fact that I had to go to Wal-Mart. I don't dislike Wal-Mart itself, specifically, it's just that it's a zoo on Saturdays. With the weather so lovely, too, it seemed like every crazy person was out driving. I felt lucky to get home safely this afternoon. I spent the late afternoon and early evening working in the yard, raking leaves and pulling up dead plants from last year. A lot of things are already coming up--lilies and daffodils, and several herbs.
I generally choose plants for my yard for their scent rather than their appearance. Rosemary and lavender are my favorites. I also love lemon-scented plants and different kinds of mint. I made an herb garden for my mother last Mother's Day and chose several different kinds of herbs with strong scents--sacred (or holy) basil and chocolate mint were her favorites.
I talked to my mom tonight and she had been working in the yard, too. She has a lot of herbs in her yard that I have given her, and she mentioned that even though the stuff she was pulling up was dried up and dead, it still smelled wonderful. I thought as I was pulling up the dry catnip plants that surely the smell would bring the neighborhood cats calling, but it didn't.
