Dos and Don'ts of Acne Treatment for Teens

In the journey for clear skin, many of us have heard conflicting information about how to treat and manage breakouts. It is often small daily habits that can exacerbate acne.

At willa we are committed to smart, healthy skin care and want to dispel some of these skin care myths. Along with incorporating a safer, healthier skin care routine, certain lifestyle changes can help deliver clear skin as well.

What to Do

Taking care of your skin can be a difficult task, especially in our fast paced lives. But remember that small changes can make a big difference. Clean your phone daily and wash your pillowcases regularly. Try to change them nightly or at least a few times a week, so that your face isn’t lying on dirty linen for multiple hours a night.

One of the most beneficial habits you can develop is to eat healthier foods. Embrace a diet high in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. Also, eat a diet high in antioxidants, like goji berries and flaxseed, and limit your intake of candy, soda and highly processed foods.

There is increasing evidence that glycemic spikes can cause inflammation and overproduction of pore-clogging sebum. Our skin is our largest organ and reflects any hormonal or intestinal imbalances and is constantly trying to purge impurities from the body.

What Not to Do

There are many habits that will exacerbate acne.

One of the most common actions, when a pimple has formed, is to pop it. You might think you are ridding your face of acne, but in fact, this can cause even worse acne breakouts to form and can even leave lasting scars on your face. So never touch a breakout. Instead, just keep cleansing twice a day, and moisturising to promote your skin’s regenerative capabilities. Stripping oils from the skin merely stimulates sebum production to compensate, so is ultimately counter-productive.
